Don't Ignore These Warning Signs of Cataract

Cataracts develop gradually. Early detection and treatment can restore your vision before it worsens significantly.

Blurry or Cloudy Vision

Objects appear hazy, blurred, or as if you're looking through a frosted or fogged-up window, regardless of lighting conditions.

Difficulty Seeing at Night

Increasing difficulty driving after dark, seeing in low-light environments, or navigating dimly lit rooms safely.

Sensitivity to Light & Glare

Bright lights, headlights, or sunlight cause discomfort or painful glare, making outdoor activities and night driving difficult.

Fading or Yellowing of Colors

Colors seem faded, yellowish, or washed out. You may notice difficulty distinguishing between shades of blue and purple.

Frequent Prescription Changes

Needing increasingly stronger prescription lenses more frequently, with temporary improvement that quickly fades again.

Double Vision in One Eye

Seeing double images or ghost images when looking through one eye, which may temporarily disappear with blinking.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's time to get checked. Early treatment preserves your vision. Book a Your Check-up

What is Cataract Surgery & How Does It Work?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens — the clear structure behind the iris and pupil — that leads to blurred, hazy, or dim vision. The lens is normally clear and focuses light on the retina, but as proteins within the lens break down over time, they clump together forming the characteristic cloudy appearance.

Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). At Trident Eye & Retina Hospital, Dr. Aakash Deep performs phacoemulsification — the most advanced, minimally invasive technique — where ultrasonic energy breaks up the cataract into tiny fragments that are gently suctioned out. The entire procedure typically takes just 15–20 minutes.

Most patients notice a dramatic improvement in vision clarity within 24–48 hours of surgery, with full visual recovery within 2–4 weeks. The procedure is performed under topical (eye drop) anaesthesia, making it completely comfortable and anxiety-free.

Available Lens (IOL) Options:

Monofocal IOL Multifocal IOL Toric IOL (Astigmatism) Extended Range IOL

Step-by-Step Surgery Process

Step 1 — Pre-operative Evaluation Biometry measurements, eye pressure check, and lens power calculation for your personalised IOL.
Step 2 — Anaesthesia (Eye Drops) Numbing eye drops are applied. No injections, no general anaesthesia — you remain awake and comfortable.
Step 3 — Phacoemulsification A micro-incision (2.2mm) is made. Ultrasonic probe breaks and removes the cloudy lens safely.
Step 4 — IOL Implantation The foldable artificial lens is inserted and positioned precisely. No stitches required.
Step 5 — Recovery & Follow-up Go home the same day. Vision improves within 24 hours. Full recovery in 2–4 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cataract Surgery

Have questions? We have answers. Here are the most common things patients ask before their cataract surgery.

No — cataract surgery is virtually painless. At Trident Eye Hospital, we use topical anaesthesia in the form of numbing eye drops. You remain completely awake and relaxed throughout the procedure. Most patients report feeling only mild pressure, and many say the experience was far more comfortable than they anticipated. There are no injections around the eye and no general anaesthesia required.
The actual surgical procedure typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes per eye. However, you should plan to spend 2–3 hours at the hospital on the day of surgery, which includes pre-operative preparation, the surgery itself, and a brief recovery observation period before you are discharged. You will be able to go home the same day.
Most patients can resume light daily activities such as reading, watching TV, and gentle walking within 24–48 hours. You should avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, and rubbing your eyes for 2–4 weeks. Driving can typically be resumed within 1 week, once your vision has stabilised and your doctor clears you. Office work and most professional activities can usually resume within 3–5 days.
We offer four main categories of intraocular lenses (IOLs): Monofocal IOLs — correct vision at one distance (usually far); Multifocal IOLs — provide clear vision at multiple distances, potentially reducing dependence on glasses; Toric IOLs — designed specifically for patients with astigmatism; and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs — offer a continuous range of vision. Dr. Aakash Deep will recommend the best option based on your eye measurements, lifestyle, and visual goals.
Yes, absolutely. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world, and there is no upper age limit. Since we use only topical eye drop anaesthesia — not general anaesthesia — it is extremely well-tolerated even by elderly patients with heart conditions, diabetes, or other health issues. Many of our patients are in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s, and they recover excellently.
It depends on the type of IOL you choose. With a Monofocal IOL, you may need reading glasses for near work, but distance vision is typically excellent. With Multifocal or EDOF IOLs, many patients achieve good vision at all distances and significantly reduce or even eliminate their dependence on glasses. Dr. Aakash Deep will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation based on your individual vision profile.
Cataract surgery is generally covered under most health insurance plans, including Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY), CGHS, and many private health insurance policies — typically for a standard Monofocal IOL. Premium lens upgrades (Multifocal, Toric) may involve an additional out-of-pocket cost. Our billing team will assist you in verifying your specific insurance coverage and processing claims before your procedure.
Preparation is straightforward: You will have a pre-operative evaluation 1–2 days before surgery for eye measurements (biometry). Use the prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops starting a day before surgery. Fast for at least 4–6 hours before the procedure (as a general precaution). Arrange for someone to drive you home — you should not drive yourself after the surgery. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and leave jewellery at home. Avoid using eye make-up on the day of surgery.
